Steve Melewski Talks Orioles Offseason

Steve Melewski from MASN Sports joined the Scott Garceau Show with Jeremy Conn to talk about the Orioles recent trade with the Mariners and whether the Orioles will be able to hang on to some of their key players this off-season.

Scott asks Steve about the likelihood of Chris Davis returning to the Orioles next season. "I think what the Orioles did with the signing of (Mark) Trumbo is they covered themselves. Let's say Davis and (Scott) Boras want to really push this well into the winter, play one team against the other and extract every dollar.   The Orioles don't have to play that game now.  If the Orioles got a prominent outfielder instead, Alex Gordon comes to mind, they can play that guy in left, Jones in center, (Nolan) Reimold or (Dariel) Alvarez or someone like that in right, Trumbo at first and then they have got to help themselves on the mound. I think the Trumbo signing gave them more options and more flexibility and the ability to not be beholden to Davis' timetable because they have a first baseman now if they can't get it going with Davis."

Scott later asks Steve if the Orioles will be able to compete with other teams to bring back relief pitcher Darren O'Day, arguably the most sought after relief pitcher in free agency this offseason.  "I think they are going to be in there with O'Day. It sounds like they have made a competitive offer and if it's competitive, it better be seven or eight million a year or it's not competitive. They must be pushing hard for O'Day.  Let's say that doesn't work out either, Roch (Kubatko)  has reported interest in Tony Sipp, that's a guy that gets out lefty's and righty's and he is left-handed. You can throw him into the late inning mix with Givens, Brach, and Britton. They can go other directions and they can save some money if they don't go for O' Day but he's so meaningful, he's such a leader."
