Beloved Musical Comes To The Hippodrome

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The most successful movie musical in history is coming to life on the stage at the Hippodrome. It's being promoted as a fresh take on the classic.

Mary Bubala has more.

The brand-new production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic Sound of Music, directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien, is now on stage in Baltimore. While the stage production includes favorites like "Edelweiss," "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favorite Things," the classics are performed by the voices of a new generation, including 20-year-old Kerstin Anderson as Maria.

We met just hours before showtime and we talked costumes and character.

"It's wonderful. It's so thrilling; she's so beloved and so well-known that getting to put your own little spin on it is kind of really fun," Anderson said.

Anderson, a current student at Pace University, won the coveted role from hundreds who auditioned. This is her first national tour.

"I just sort of went in, sang `The Sound of Music' and got a callback and got another one and ended up getting to do it," she said.

The Sound of Music premieres Tuesday at the Hippodrome and runs through December 13.

Tickets are still available. Click here for more information.
