Baltimore Residents Can Now Track 911 Calls

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--Baltimore city residents are now able to track 911 calls in their own neighborhoods.

The police department is adding information to those calls on its public safety website.

WJZ's Pat Warren has the details.

Fortunately the majority of day-to-day calls are not so tragic, but residents still expect quick responses to crime and safety issues, and when the police don't respond as expected, it generates complaints.

Now the police department is posting 911 calls on the city's website, so people can track the calls for help.

"The complaints are just simple, it ranges from 'oh I called 911 and had to wait an hour,'" said Councilman Brandon Scott.

Scott first introduced the idea in 2012, and newly appointed commissioner Kevin Davis is sold on transparency.

"There are many different ways police departments can become more transparent and one of those ways is to have a system that identifies calls for service in our communities so our residents can see what's going on in their neighborhoods," said Police Commissioner Kevin Davis.

You'll see date and time, priority level, and the hundred block of the addresses officers respond to.

As an added benefit, the department hopes to encourage residents to work closer with police in supporting safety.

Similar systems are in operation in cities around the country.
