Maryland Names 6 Schools To Compete For Blue Ribbon Awards

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore-area schools make up five of the six Maryland institutions that have been selected to compete for national Blue Ribbon awards next year.

Officials at the Maryland State Department of Education announced the winners Monday.

Baltimore County's Hereford High School and George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology won the honor, as well as Harford County's North Harford Elementary School, St. Mary's County's White Marsh Elementary School and Anne Arundel County's Arnold and Pasadena elementary schools.

The Blue Ribbon Schools program recognizes schools with high performance or marked improvement in reading and math on state tests. The schools also must meet strict state and federal standards.

The schools will compete for national Blue Ribbon awards, which the U.S. Department of Education will announce next September.
