Online Terror Threats Sweeping Through Schools Across The Nation

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--At a time of heightened fears, terror threats against schools are leaving parents, children and teachers on edge, even right here in Maryland.

WJZ's Rick Ritter has more.

Online terror threats are sweeping through school districts across the nation rattling the nerves of many.

The list of school districts receiving threatening e-mails stretches coast to coast, Los Angeles being one of the most recent.

While investigators don't know who sent the messages, they say all e-mails were routed through a server in Germany by a man named Vincent Canfield, a 21 year old native of Maine who's now received a subpoena from New York City Police.

Just this week, a similar situation unfolded in Harford County where a 15-year-old student was charged with making terroristic threats after he allegedly made a threat on social media about bringing weapons to Fallston High School.

"It was apparent pretty immediately that the threat was not credible," said Major John Simpson, Harford County Sheriff's Office.

"A lot of resources went into action as a result of this joke," said Simpson.

At a time of heightened security, it's these jokes that are becoming all too common.

In Harford County, investigators quickly found that boy at home with his mother, no guns or explosives were found.

The 15 year-old has been suspended and remains in the custody of his parents pending a juvenile hearing.
