Retailers Celebrate "Super Saturday" With Last-Minute Holiday Shoppers

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Less than a week left and the countdown to Christmas is officially on. Retailers call this "Super Saturday."

As Gigi Barnett explains, a new survey reveals this year's holiday shopping season is thriving.

At the Marley Station Mall in Glen Burnie, Santa is in place, holiday lights are aglow and the deals are endless.

"We're not done yet. We were trying to head back to the car but I have another hand and she has another hand," said Dawn Ritchie. "We'll shop until we have no more hands."

This is Super Saturday. Shoppers know they're close to the Christmas Day deadline and retailers are pulling out all of the stops.

"This Saturday will probably be bigger than Black Friday for many of our merchants," said Marley Station Mall General Manager John Hess.

A new study released this week shows holiday gift sales nationwide are on pace to reach $140 billion this year. That breaks down to an average of $630 per customer.

"It has been incredibly busy these last few weeks," said Zoey Hebron.

Hebron runs the Kay Jewelers store at Marley Station and says their bottom line is already brighter.

"We do, believe it or not, 50% of the business for the entire month in the last two weeks and I would say a good 25% of the business alone in the last four days," she said.

Nearly half of all holiday shoppers say they still have some work to do on that shopping list. Experts say this weekend, more than 90% of those will head out to stores and get it done.

According to the survey, 37% of shoppers believe the deals and discounts offered by stores will get better as Christmas gets closer.
