Trax On Wax Owner Says Turntables, Records Popular Christmas Gifts

CATONSVILLE, Md. (WJZ) -- If you're looking for a last-minute Christmas gift you might want to head to Catonsville.

It's where records and turntables are making a comeback.

Ron Matz has more from where vinyl is king.

The Christmas song spins on a turntable -- This is Trax On Wax on Frederick Road.

"They thought this rocker was off his rocker," said Gary Gebler, owner of Trax On Wax on Frederick Road.

But Gebler wasn't -- thousands of albums are in stock at his store. The milk crates come in handy; sales are brisk especially at holiday time.

"Turntables are one of the hottest gifts this year. They're flying off the shelves," Gebler said. " We sell a ton of turntables and what that means is people need record albums."

Nirvana and Adele, Mariah for Christmas, The Star Wars Soundtrack -- a new generation of vinyl.

"Sam Smith has come out with a record album, Fall Out Boy and Adele along with the popular staples from the 90's like Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam have albums as well," he said. "That's brought out a younger crowd."

They'll buy your albums too.

Now here's a really cool holiday gift -- a record bowl just $4.99.

In Catonsville, a very vinyl Christmas.

"I knew vinyl would make a comeback. I really felt that," Gebler said. "And for a lot of people, vinyl never really went away."

The Record Industry Association of America reports that vinyl sales were up more than 52 percent in the first half of the year.
