Hundreds Of Flights Canceled Due To Stormy Weather

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The storms and the fog have put a wrench in some Christmas plans, with hundreds of flights canceled.

Meghan McCorkell has more as people try to get to their destination.

On the roads, traffic is flowing smoothly. That's not the case at some airports across the country.

Hundreds of flights were canceled nationwide as stormy weather strikes the Southeast.

"All of our flights have been canceled, so it's a little sad because we want to get home. Our kids are a little sad. They want to see their grandparents," said Kari Bardelli.

"We always fly on this day, in fact. And so, this is the first time that we've had a flight canceled," said Yvette Christian.

Travelers in Atlanta were hit with the most cancellations. Tara Stockdale had already shipped her children's gifts across the country.

"The kids won't have any gifts. The gifts are in Chicago. So this is going to be the first Christmas morning that, you know, they're not going to open up anything," said Tara Stockdale.

With hundreds of delays Christmas Eve, the airlines are trying to play catch up this Christmas.

At BWI, the flight board is looking pretty good, and it appears most people have made it to their destination.

Empty terminals and short security lines--a holiday treat for travelers.

"So far, so good. I'm surprised it's actually very light," said Steve Olson.

"The lines here aren't bad to go through security. The rates were good," said Karen Olson.

The roads are also smooth-sailing. With gas prices plummeting, a record number of drivers were expected to hit the roads this holiday.

Many of them got an eary start.

"We're actually leaving at 5 a.m. Trying to get out of there early and beat the traffic," said Christopher Lake.

Now, a day of rest, before it's time to think about the trip back home.

Experts say the worst time to head back home will be on Sunday, when most drivers are on the road.

The best time to drive back will be Monday morning.
