6,500 Fireworks, Thousands of Spectators, Will Ring In 2016 In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--We're just hours away from a brand new year and Baltimore City is getting ready for tens of thousands of people to join in the downtown festivities.

WJZ's Meghan McCorkell has more on the preparations.

Ringing in the new year with a bang. Thousands of people are expected at the Inner Harbor for the New Year's Spectacular.

"It's a tradition and it's beautiful the harbor lights are beautiful on New Year's Eve," said L'Keisha Markley.

For many, the celebration is a family affair.

"We're really encouraging families and visitors to come have dinner and then stay for the band and do a little ice skating and then enjoy the fireworks," said Megan Bosse, Baltimore City Promotions.

With big crowds expected local businesses are getting ready.

Mike Evitts, with Downtown Partnership says for a lot of restaurants and hotels, New Year's Eve really helps make their year.

Police at the Inner Harbor are also preparing with metal barricades set to go for crowd control.

The number of officers will be increased across downtown.

"Many of these officers will be visible, but we'll also have unseen resources across the city committed to making these festivities safe and successful," said Baltimore Police Col. Melissa Hyatt.

Both federal and local partners will also assist with security to keep everyone safe for the big show.

Early Wednesday crews prepped for the spectacular display loading 6,500 fireworks that will light up the Baltimore sky.

"My favorite part is when we see that first shell go up at midnight and we start the New Year with a bang," said Nick Hock, Image Engineering.

A beautiful start to a new beginning.

Police also warn if you're headed downtown several roads will be closed ahead of midnight.
