Sparrows Point Steel Mill Renamed 'Tradepoint Atlantic'

SPARROWS POINT, Md. (WJZ) -- A new name and new hope for land that once housed Bethlehem Steel.

Alex DeMetrick reports Sparrows Point Terminal is now Tradepoint Atlantic and global trade is the goal.

Maryland demolition experts brought down what was the hot heart of steelmaking in Sparrows Point, the main blast furnace of a century-old business. Steelmaking was done and so was hope.

"No, it seemed the only thing it was good for was a zombie movie at that point," said Karen Wynn.

Purchased and cleared by a company called Sparrows Point Terminal, plans are to begin building here again---starting with the unveiling of a new name for the company and the project: Tradepoint Atlantic.

"We intend to be North America's premier industrial gateway," said Tradepoint Atlantic CEO Michael Moore.

By building a transit facility larger than the Port of Baltimore, turning over 3,000 acres into a global transportation and manufacturing hub.

"I'm really hopeful within the next 10 years, we're going to see 10,000 good paying jobs back here at the point," said Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz.

Local residents were invited to the announcement, and they're hopeful.

"[It'll] really help the area," Wynn said.

Jobs created here will have a domino effect outside this project.

"The whole economy has been hurt by the lack of jobs in this area. I think the situation of all this going on down here is going to bring the economy back to the whole area," said Sam Weaver.

A ship the point would love to see come in.

As a transportation hub, Tradepoint Atlantic already has a deep water port, connections to major rail lines and sits right on I-95.
