Hogan Announces $152M To Widen Route 32

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- Road to relief. One of the most dangerous stretches of highway in the state is getting some improvements.

Pat Warren has the good news for drivers.

Some 30,000 cars a day travel a section of Route 32 in Howard County that narrows to one lane in each direction. That's about to be widened.

A black and yellow sign warns: two-way traffic, use headlights at all times. It's a stretch of Route 32 in Howard County -- a two-lane highway with two-way traffic -- one of the most treacherous in the state.

That's about to change.

"Sounds good. I think it will help traffic and stop the congestion going between Olney and Route 108," said one driver.

That's exactly what it will do.

"There are stories of teachers from our local high school being killed at an intersection on Route 32. Just a few feet from here, I've seen accidents where people have gone off the side of the road," said Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman.

And as far as urgency...

"We've already started," Governor Larry Hogan said.

"Oh. Well, that's good," said one driver.

Phase one is the $33 million start at Route 108. Phase two begins in 2019 at $107 million. Phase three is in the planning stage.

"Oh. I think that's good. It's going to stop traffic and wrecks as well," said one man.

Total investment -- $152 million.

Route 404 and Route 113 on the Eastern Shore are also scheduled for improvement.

The Hogan administration also intends to fix every structurally deficient bridge in the state.
