Lawyer: Video Disputes Baltimore Police Account Of Shooting

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--Baltimore City police officers claim they shot a man in self-defense. It happened in southwest Baltimore two years ago after police say the suspect tried to hit them with his car.

Now, an attorney for the victim says surveillance video is telling a different story.

Jessica Kartalija has more.

Surveillance video from January, 2013, shows Shaun Mouzon pulling up to a traffic light on Edmonson Avenue followed by an unmarked police car with its lights flashing.

Officers run to the sides of Mouzon's car and several shots are fired.

"What I saw in the video contrary to what the police reports indicated and what the probable cause indicated at that point in time, the vehicle is totally still, not moving," said the victim's attorney, Dwight Pettit.

Charging documents say the three officers who opened fire on Mouzon's car, were acting in self-defense, after Mouzon tried to hit them with his car. They also said they believed Mouzon was armed.

"They searched my client, Mouzon upon going to Shock Trauma, they also searched the vehicle pursuant to a search warrant and no weapon was found," said Pettit.

The three officers involved were cleared of any wrongdoing.

Mouzon has filed a lawsuit against the department alleging a pattern of police brutality by city police.

"I would like to possibly see them review the evidence in terms of possibly reopening a criminal investigation--not only for the shooting--but for the perjury involved in the police reports which were filled out under oath," Pettit said.

Mouzon was charged with two handgun-related counts, failing to obey an officer, and traffic violations. All charges were eventually dropped.
