Scott Garceau: Who Should Be On The 'Super Bowl 50 Golden Team'?

As part of the NFL's Super Bowl 50 celebration The Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee has been asked to participate in the selection of the "Super Bowl 50 Golden Team." It's not easy to sift through 49 years of Super Bowls to find this "Golden Team."

For instance Timmy Smith of the Redskins ran for 204 yards in the greatest rushing performance in Super Bowl history, but does a 1-hit wonder deserve 1 of the 2 running back spots over guys like Franco Harris, Emmitt Smith or Terrell Davis who had multiple appearances?

I've seen all 49 Super Bowls and have attended about 20 of them, some more memorable than others, like last year when an inexplicable Patriots goal line interception prevented Russell Wilson and Seattle from winning back to back titles. In researching this project I found some interesting Super Bowl nuggets.

  • Tom Brady has played in 6 Super Bowls but Charles Haley is the only player to win 5.

Jerry Rice has 8 touchdowns in 4 games the only player with more than 5.

  • My buddy Tom Matte averaged a Super Bowl record 10.5 yards a carry (min. 10 carries) in SB III and his 58 yard run against the Jets is the third longest in SB history.     Kurt Warner has the top 3 games in passing yards (414, 377, 365).
    • Baltimore's (Poly H.S.) Antonio Freeman had 3 receiving TD's in 2 Super Bowls with the Packers, only Jerry Rice has more. Freeman's 81 yard TD reception against New England is the second longest in SB History.

Jacoby Jones 108 yard kickoff return in the Ravens win over the 49ers is not only a Super Bowl record but the only kickoff return of 100 yards plus.

    • Jones 290 total yards in Super Bowl XLVII smashed the previous record of 244.

Busy, the Redskins John Riggins had a record 38 carries in SB XVII and the Bills Jim Kelly threw it a record 58 times in SB XXVI.

    • Tough times, Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon threw 5 interceptions in SB XXXVII against Tampa Bay.
    • The Ravens whipped the Giants 34-7 in SB XXXV but Baltimore's Kyle Richardson punted 10 times the second most in SB history, the Giants punted a record 11 times in that same game.
    • Not fair, the Baltimore Colts turned the ball over 7 times in SB V and still beat the Cowboys. Buffalo didn't have a turnover in SB XXV but lost to the Giants.
      • Terry Bradshaw has the highest SB career TD percentage with 9 scores in 84 passes (10.71%).
      • Despite not having a franchise for 12 years Baltimore's 3 Super Bowl wins are exceeded by only 6 teams (Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Dallas, Green Bay, NY Giants, New England)
