No Break From Cold Ahead Of Possible Winter Storm

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Bundle up, Baltimore! We're tracking two big weather stories--Marylanders are getting no break from the frigid cold temperatures, and there's a threat of a major snowstorm looming.

Meghan McCorkell with how people are coping with these freezing conditions.

Baltimore City has extended its code blue emergency into Wednesday morning, as those temperatures and wind chill continue to plummet.

Bone chilling cold, plummeting temperatures and whipping winds. Now imagine if all that was inside your home.

Tyesha Harrell and her five children sleep huddled together in their living room in Gilmor Homes as their heat remains broken.

"A few months ago, all five of my kids had scarlett fever. Now they come in with another cold from it being so cold in here at night," said Harrell.

She and many of her neighbors are doing what they can to beat the chill.

"As you can see, we're resulting to turning on stoves and ovens just to stay warm," said Shatira White.

"That's the only way you're going to keep warm," said Barbara Faust.

And it's not just people inside their homes suffering from these freezing temperatures.

In Baltimore City, several schools closed down early after heating systems failed to work.

"The boilers in the school is not working. One of them is shut down bad and it's not functioning," said Herman Hardy, grandfather.

There's nowhere to stay warm if you're stuck on the side of the road. State Highway crews are working overtime to help out.

"If you're stranded out here, of course, there's concerns with hypothermia," said Ernie Ford, State Highway Administration.

It was also a rough day for construction crews, working to fix another broken water main.

Back at Gilmor Homes, settling in for another cold night sparks fears about the impending storm.

"I'm scared we're going to wind up in the hospital," said White.

As they pray the heat gets fixed.

That possible winter storm is what everybody is talking about. State officials are warning people to be prepared for this weekend.
