Steve Davis: Losing Key Recruits Big Blow For Maryland

Signing Day is fast approaching in college football. It is February 3. New Maryland coach DJ Durkin looks to have his work cut out for him.

He just lost the top 2 local DMV recruits of Randy Edsall, Dwayne Haskins and Keandre Jones. Both recruits were tied to Mike Locksley. When the Terps didn't retain Locksley, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion they would lose them. Now, some people are saying they should have figured out a way to pay and keep Locksley. I don't agree. You can't keep a coach just because you don't want to lose some recruits. Durkin has to be able to hire "his" guys, and do you really want a guy on your staff who wanted your job, thinks he might have deserved your job and, thus, might not be totally loyal to you. Locksley is supposed to be a top recruiter. That said, how much good did it really do Maryland.

Even with his recruiting, Maryland was still getting recruiting classes that were ranked middle of the pack in the Big Ten. Maryland may not have anyone to play quarterback next year with Haskins gone, but did anyone really expect him to come in and be great in the Big Ten as a freshman. That was probably unrealistic.
