Maryland Slowly Recovering From Massive Winter Storm

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Slowly recovering. It's day three of the cleanup, and crews across Maryland continue working to clear the record snow--but there's still a lot of work left to do.

Tracey Leong reports Maryland still has a long way to go to recover from the massive winter storm.

From sidewalks to side streets in business and residential neighborhoods, many remain under a blanket of snow. People tell WJZ they are outraged it has not been cleared.

Buried under piles of snow with no way to escape.

"We're stuck back here, and it's not right," said Michelle Whitaker.

Whitaker lives on Lillyan Avenue in Baltimore City. She hasn't seen one plow come down her street.

Neighbors like Wanda Price have been shoveling all day.

"We can't do anymore because this is way out of the scope of what we're capable of doing," Price said.

Upset they're unable to escape. One of the biggest frustrations is people who are trapped say they've called for help, but they're simply being ignored.

"Told us it still looks like it's open and he'll be back. That was hours ago," said Whitaker.

The frustration is being felt across Maryland.

In Randallstown, Baltimore County, it's the same story.

"They said, 'We are sending somebody right away,' and we haven't seen anybody," said Pratibha Sharma.

Another major concern is the sidewalks.

"We don't want people walking out in the street, especially when, at the same time, we have people trying to get in to work," Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said.

Baltimore City will begin handing out citations for businesses that don't clear their sidewalks to give people safe access to public transportation.

Hundreds of contractors are spread across the region. Plows are in high demand.

In White Marsh, crews are clearing parking lots to get businesses back up and running--a long road ahead that will take time and patience.

Baltimore City will begin isssuing citations Wednesday if businesses do not clear sidewalks to allow people to safely access public transportation.

There is no timeline on when those streets will be completely cleared.
