52-Member Cast Brings Phantom Of The Opera To Life In Charm City

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Twenty eight years ago today, the Phantom of the Opera officially opened on Broadway.

But, as Jessica Kartalija reports, we can see the show right here in Charm City.

The synthesizer, vocals, and the iconic chandelier make the Phantom of the Opera one of the most technical and popular performances ever.

"Our chandelier is one of the stars of the show. It weighs more than 1-ton.  It has 6,000 beads, it contains pyrotechnics, smoke and haze, lighting and sound effects," said stage manager Jovon Shuck. "It has as much choreography as our ballerinas, it really is one of the more iconic stars of the show."

"Ever since I was a child, I would listen to the cd on loop so when I got to play the primadonna of the show, oh my gosh, it was a dream come true," says Jacquelynne Fontaine, who plays Carlotta.

This show is performed by a cast and orchestra of 52, making it one of the largest productions on tour.

"This is the same phantom that you know and love, the same gorgeous music.  It's just a modern take on it," Fontaine says.

And a modern take on one of the most memorable scenes in any performance!

With more than 11,600 performances, Phantom of the Opera is the longest running show on Broadway

The show runs through February 7th. Tickets are still available.
