WEATHER BLOG: Thursday
Under a clear sky early this morning with a very light wind, there were a few icy spots out there for a
while... The melting of some of last weekend's snow, followed by a 're-freezing' during the night may also
cause slush to freeze solid, especially in some suburban neighborhoods... Aside from that, today should
turn out a little chillier than the past couple of days, even though there should be a decent amount of
sunshine... Most temperatures this afternoon will be near 40... A clipper-type wave is located in the Great
Lakes region today... This will manage to slide into the St. Lawrence River Valley of Quebec by early
tomorrow morning, and winds east of the Appalachians will start to pick up, probably in the afternoon...
There's going to be another wave of low pressure located in the ocean -- or, the same one which had us
concerned earlier this week that accumulating snow might return to the mid-Atlantic states...
We still expect that wave located offshore will only bring a period of snow to Cape Cod tomorrow...
However, there will also be a very strong shortwave, or 'potent jet stream disturbance', and it is forecasted
to move across southeastern New York, northeastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey... So, we still
can't rule out a few flurries or a snow shower entirely, especially during the first half of tomorrow... Its the
kind of thing that we can't completely ignore, even though quantitative precipitation forecasts generated by
these models are printing out very little in major Eastern cities... The weekend should get off to a relatively
chilly start, but we at least can look forward to a "Saturday that will be soon forgotten" weather-wise....
Milder air still seems as if it will be spreading out across the eastern third of the country on Sunday and
Monday -- which is definitely a strange way to make the transition from January to February... However,
most temperatures on Sunday will climb well into the 40s, and if it doesn't reach 50 in a handful of cities
located near I-95 on Sunday afternoon, then it probably will on Monday...
