As Baltimore School Enrollment Falls, Funding Cuts Loom

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Public schools in Baltimore face the loss of nearly $30 million in funding after enrollment dropped.

Schools CEO Gregory Thornton tells The Baltimore Sun he has launched an internal investigation to see of some students were incorrectly kept on the rolls.

About 1,900 pupil slots will no longer be funded by taxes. This, along with reductions from other factors, including a formula that measures wealth in the area, will result in cuts, according to Gov. Larry Hogan's proposed budget.

City funding is also likely to decline as much as $4 million.

Baltimore is one of Maryland's largest school districts, with nearly 85,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade and a $1.2 billion budget.
