BaltCo Students Get Star Treatment Thanks To Hippodrome Partnership

BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) -- The path to becoming a triple threat starts in high school for many actors; students at one Baltimore County school are getting the star treatment, thanks to a partnership with the Hippodrome. They're focusing on a classic musical that's at the theater now.

Gigi Barnett has more.

Under the stage spotlight, any production starts with hard work---but the dancing, acting and singing for the classic musical "Phantom of the Opera" is tough.

"Definitely a vocal workout, yes," said student Autumn Black.

No worries. Students at Lansdowne High got some help from the pros. Through a partnership with the Hippodrome Theatre, actors from the production visited their school Wednesday. Lessons from the dancers, actors and singers who make the musical come alive become crystal clear.

"Sometimes some of the things that I will share with them have a totally different meaning when they hear it from someone else," said teacher Rob Tracey.

And when those actors give tips on how to break into the business, this workshop is golden.

"One of our missions is to expose the kids to the career options that are available and to put them into the schools so they see they can do this," said Hippodrome Education Director Barb Wirsing.

And if that doesn't pan out, being a triple threat helps in other ways.

"Being on stage and having that exposure and being raw and opening yourself up to a million people in any sense definitely helps you with social skills, one on one," said Black.

More than 100 students participated in the workshop.
