D.C. Suburbs Dominate State Sales In Record Powerball Jackpot

SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) -- Records show that retailers in the Washington suburbs dominated state sales in the unprecedented $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot.

The Baltimore Sun reports nine of the top 10 Maryland sellers were in either Montgomery County or Prince George's County. The newspaper obtained the information through a public record request.

Records show that a beer and wine store in Montgomery County sold the most tickets of any of the state's more than 4,000 lottery retailers during the Powerball ball roll, which began Nov. 4.

The record jackpot grew until the Jan. 13 drawing. Winning tickets were purchased in California, Florida and Tennessee.

Maryland had three $1 million winners--two in Prince George's County and one in Frederick County. State retailers sold $73.2 million in tickets.
