Police Search For Suspect In Double Shooting Of Elderly Woman, Man

BALTIMORE (WJZ) – It's a case that's generating outrage beyond Baltimore: who shot a 92-year-old woman and her 82-year-old brother? No one is in custody after the brazen crime in broad daylight in West Baltimore.

WJZ Investigator Mike Hellgren has new information from the victims' niece.

She recounted their frightening moments--two senior citizens who simply wanted to get a sandwich—shot down.

They are home recovering, but this has left lasting emotional and physical scars.

Just moments after her 82 and 92-year-old uncle and aunt were gunned down near a West Baltimore shopping center, April Ryan, the White House correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks, started getting calls.

As she sat in the White House press briefing, you could see her checking her phone.

"And I keep pressing decline. And I'm like something must be up for her to keep calling me," Ryan said. "Right after the briefing when Josh Earnest left, I picked up the phone and I called."

That's when she heard the horrifying news that her aunt and uncle had been shot.

"And I screamed in the briefing room. I said, 'Shot!' And everybody was just like, 'Oh my gosh,'" said Ryan. "This tells me no one is immune."

Two innocent bystanders--senior citizens--caught in the crossfire of Baltimore gun violence.

"If it's allowed to happen one more day, it's going to happen again and again and again. It's got to stop," Ryan said.

It all happened so fast. People were screaming, and bullets were flying.

"In the midst of going to the carryout, they heard, according to my uncle, this 'bam, bam, bam.' She went down to the ground. My uncle was standing; he was shot in the leg," said Ryan. "His eyes filled up with tears when I said it could have been the other way."

Police are desperate to find the shooter—anyone involved. They've released pictures of the man they believe is responsible.

The shooting happened on Clifton Avenue—just two blocks from two other recent shootings.

"You don't get into a shopping center at one o'clock and take out your anger issues by firing upon someone and hitting these two elderly people," said T.J. Smith, Baltimore City Police Department.

"There are so many families who are not as fortunate as mine—there are so many families--and my heart breaks for them. I'm just thankful," said Ryan.

Her aunt has a head injury. Her aunt and uncle both have leg injuries.

Anyone with information should call Citywide Shooting Section at 410-396-2221 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.
