Ocean City Approves Church's Plans After Fatal 2013 Fire
OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) -- Ocean City officials have approved a church's plan to rebuild after a 2013 fire destroyed the rectory and killed the church's pastor and the man who authorities say started the fire.
Town Communications Manager Jessica Waters confirmed to The Daily Times of Salisbury this week that the Ocean City Planning and Zoning Commission recently approved the construction plans for St. Paul's by-the-sea Episcopal Church.
On Nov. 26, 2013, officials say John Raymond Sterner set himself on fire with gasoline and ran into the church, instantly setting the building ablaze. Sterner and the church's pastor, the Rev. David Dingwall, were killed. A woman was severely burned.
In 2014, leaders decided to demolish rather than renovate the destroyed rectory.
