Va. Officer Slain On 1st Shift Laid To Rest

WOODBRIDGE, Va. (WJZ)—Nearly 4,000 people packed a Northern Virginia chapel for a young police officer killed in the line of duty over the weekend.

Mary Bubala has more.

The Prince William Community said one final goodbye to Officer Ashley Guindon, 28, who was killed when she, and two other officers responded to a domestic related incident on Saturday night.

Thousands of law enforcement from across the nation, including here in Maryland, gathered to salute Officer Guindon at the Hylton Memorial Chapel, in Woodbride.

Police have charged the gunman, 32-year-old Ronald Hamilton, who was an army staff sergeant assigned to the Pentagon.

Hamilton also killed his 29-year-old wife sometime before officers arrive at his residence.

Court documents obtained by WJZ reveal Hamilton confessed to killing his wife and Officer Guindon.

As investigators work to understand how his life spiraled out of control, the focus was back on the life of Officer Guindon and how dedicated she was to her new job.

"She had a willingness for an 11-year-old boy in that home, a willingness to give her life for that child," said Police Chief Stephan Hudson.

Officer Guindon was also remembered for her achievements, with a degree in aeronautical science,  a volunteer for suicide prevention and a decorated U.S. Marine Corp reservist.

"She had accomplished more in 28 years than I could in 100. It was her desire to serve, to be involved in things that mattered, to give her life to something worth giving it to," said Chief Hudson.

Officer Guindon is survived by her mother Sharon, who lives in New Hampshire, where Ashley grew up.

Officers Hempen and McKeown, who were also shot by Hamilton are both expected to survive.

Hamilton's next court appearance is set for late April.
