Baltimore School For The Arts Fundraiser Showcases Student Talent

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- There's a big fundraiser this weekend for the Baltimore School For the Arts.

Mary Bubala has details on the event and what it means for the school.

The popular event called "Expressions" is always centered around the school's talented students, and this year, they're capturing the heart and core of the school.

Final rehearsals are underway for the biggest event all year at the Baltimore School for the Arts.

"It's an opportunity for us to showcase what we work hard on all year," said one student.

This year's theme, What's At Our Core, explores the school's values. No one knows that better than two teachers who've been at the school from the start--influencing famous alums along the way--but are set to retire at the end of the year.

"On the art side, all the people who teach here are also working professionals. So the students are really mentored by people who are out there in the world doing the art that they love," said BSA theater department head Donald Hicken.

"It's always a lot of energy, and a lot of really good energies. It's really great to see the range of people that come out to support public education," said BSA visual arts department head Stephen Kent.

The event features exhibits and performances by BSA's most talented students in art, music, dance and theater. The annual fundraiser supports college scholarships, student assistance and programming.

"Expressions is like the Oscars of our school," said one student.

The Expressions gala is Saturday night, but there are other events on Sunday and into next week. For more information, CLICK HERE.
