Police Investigating Death At Baltimore City Landfill

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A man is killed at a South Baltimore landfill after he's hit by a dump truck.

Rick Ritter has more on the investigation, and how the tragic incident unfolded.

We're told OSHA is now involved in the investigation--which is still in the early stages--surrounding the man police say was crushed and killed by a dump truck.

Only WJZ was there Tuesday night when a Baltimore City ambulance left the tragic scene in Hawkins Point.

The initial call came in around 3:30 p.m. as a vehicle accident.

"Upon investigation, it was determined it was more of an industrial accident," said Lt. Jarron Jackson, Baltimore City Police Department.

Police say the victim was working outside of his truck when another truck started backing up. That's when he was pinned between both vehicles and killed.

Sky Eye Chopper 13 hovered over the landfill and what appeared to be one of the trucks involved.

The victim was pronounced dead on the scene--a heart-wrenching death where plenty of questions remain unanswered.

"You have an expectation that you go to work and you enjoy your work day and you go home. Unfortunately, this gentleman lost his life at the landfill today," said Lt. Jackson.

Both OSHA and police are involved in the investigation.

Officials with the Department of Public Works say the vehicle involved was not one of its trucks.

On Wednesday, police identified the man killed as 61-year-old James Tyler of the unit block of Eastership Road.

Investigators believe he was pinned between two trucks at the landfill.

His death was classified as accidental.
