Dramatic 911 Calls Released After Kids Fall Into Hole Near McDonald's
ROSEDALE, Md. (WJZ) -- Dramatic 911 calls have been released, pleading for help after two kids fell into a 30-foot hole.
Ava-joye Burnett has more of the nerve-wracking calls.
When you listen to these calls, you can hear the panic in the callers' voices, especially because one of the kids was so far underground, they could barely hear his calls for help.
Panic was coming from the voice of a total stranger.
"Baltimore County 911," the operator said.
"Yeah, I need ambulance, police officer, all kinds of stuff out there. There's a kid stuck way down in a hole," the caller said.
One of the first callers to 911 was just going about his business when his day took an unexpected turn. Two kids fell into a 30-foot hole near a Rosedale McDonald's. The hole was hidden under mulch.
"I walked over to the hole to see what the hole looked like and I hear somebody, like, all the way down the bottom yelling up, like, help," the caller said.
"You'll be alright. I am on the phone with them. You will be okay. I am on the phone with 911 now," the caller told the children.
Somehow, one of the kids was able to claw his way out, then ran home for help.
"Tried to call police but no service, so I just tried to climb up," said Makai McEachin, who fell in the hole.
He said `I fell in a hole,' and I didn't know what he was saying. I'm like, `A hole?' and at the same time, he said, `And Louis is still in the hole,'" said his mother, Mia Minter.
"The rescue guy, he went down head first. They took him down head first so he could grab the guy and pull him up," said witness Rick Ennis.
As crews rescued Louis Gervais Sunday night, he knew the outcome could have been very different.
"I am happy he was there because if somebody else was there and they didn't know how to climb, we would probably still be down there," Gervais said.
That 30-foot hole was on McDonald's property. It's now covered with a steel plate.
Both boys were taken to Johns Hopkins but they are now home.
