Hogan Will Not Vote For Trump If He Gets Nomination

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- Not a Trump fan. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan takes a stand against Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump. He says he will not vote for him, and calls the election a mess.

Meghan McCorkell has more on the governor's comments.

The governor says he will not support Trump and that he can't even stand to watch the debates on TV.

After a slew of controversial comments and violence at his rallies, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan says he will not support presidential candidate Donald Trump, telling the Associated Press: "I'm not a Trump fan. I don't think he should be the nominee."

Of the entire election, the governor says: "I don't even want to be involved. It's a mess. I hate the whole thing. I don't think we have the best candidates in either party that are being put up."

Hogan joins other Republican leaders who have distanced themselves from Donald Trump. For the first-term governor, it's a departure from long-time political ally, Chris Christie, a leading supporter of Trump.

"It's very rare. I think this is a very unusual political year," said political analyst Dr. Richard Vatz.

Vatz says it's very rare for a Republican governor to speak out against the party's presidential front-runner.

"In any other year, those reactions might not have been sensible. In this year, those reactions strike me as eminently reasonable," Vatz said.

Governor Hogan says, at this point, he has no plans to attend the Republican National Convention in July.

A recent poll found Governor Hogan's approval rating soaring at 61 percent.
