Baltimore Celebrates Greek Week

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- It's Greek Week in Baltimore. Greek-owned restaurants will be featuring specials and there's much more over the next seven days.

Ron Matz has more on the celebration of all things Greek.

You can see it along Eastern Avenue and feel it on the street. Baltimore Greek Week is here.

"Baltimore Greek Week is a celebration of all things Greek. We're celebrating the 195th anniversary of Greek independence from the Ottoman Turkish empire and we like to share our love of Greece and food," said Gayle Economos, Baltimore Greek Week. "Baltimore Greek Week has specials all over, not just in Greektown. From White Marsh to Cockeysville, from Catonsville to Towson, we have restaurants all over the place."

And, of course, that includes the love of Greek food. A dozen Greek-owned restaurants will offer specials. The tables are set with authentic Greek dishes, including lamb, on the menu.

"Lamb is a mainstay of Greek cooking, especially this time of year---springtime," said Xenophon Kohilas, Ikaros. "I must give thanks to the Greek ladies. For 5,000 years, they have been developing these recipes so I'm honored to be able to handle it myself and keep it authentic."

And there's crab cakes, too.

"It's a celebration. According to others, and a lot of people say it, we have some of the best crab cakes in Maryland," said Kohilas.

Friday night at Ikaros, there's a special dinner featuring the food from the island of Ikaria, where diet means a long life.

"The grand finale is Sunday, the Greek Independence Day parade. It starts at Eastern and Haven, comes down Eastern, turns right at Ponca and ends at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church," said Economos.

The culmination of Greek Week is Sunday on Eastern Avenue. It's the Greek Indepedence Day Parade.
