Man Accused Of Pulling Gun At Capitol A 66-Year-Old Pastor From Tenn.

WASHINGTON (WJZ) -- Twenty-four hours after a chaotic scene at the U.S. Capitol, there is new information about the man accused of pulling a gun in the visitor center.

The suspect was shot by police. The incident put the whole area on lockdown.

Rick Ritter updates the investigation.

Sixty-six-year-old Larry Dawson is a pastor. It's not the first time he's been in trouble on Capitol Hill--adding to what's already been a busy year for security in the heart of D.C.

Cell phone video shows chaos at the U.S. Capitol. Chilling moments left hundreds taking cover Monday afternoon.

Police say 66-year-old Larry Dawson, a pastor from Tennessee, pulled a gun and pointed it at officers when going through security.

He was then shot and taken to the hospital, leaving the entire complex on lockdown.

Dawson is no stranger at the Capitol. Just months ago, he was ordered to stay away after police say he disrupted a session of Congress.

The court later issued a warrant for his arrest.

Both the Capitol and White House have been plagued by an embarrassing number of incidents over the past year.

In November, a man wrapped in an American flag hopped the White House fence and landed on the lawn of the presidential residence.

Before that, a man landed his gyrocopter on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol.

And before that, there was another White House fence jumper--all revealing a gap in security that continues to catch the eye of lawmakers.

"This is a wake up call for all of us and for all of the agencies," said Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings.

It even prompted an addition of more spikes along the White House fence.

"This is not going to totally eliminate somebody from breaching security," said Vernon Herron, University of Maryland Center for Health and Homeland Security.

Raising eyebrows over what's supposed to be one of the most secure places in the country.

Police say based on a preliminary investigation, the security screening process at the Capitol worked exactly the way it was supposed to.

Dawson remains in critical but stable condition. He could appear in court as early as Wednesday.

Dawson is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and armed assault on a police officer.
