Police Arrest 20-Year-Old In Fatal Stabbing Of Morgan State Student

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A major arrest in the murder of a Morgan State University student. A former student is now behind bars for stabbing 20-year-old Gerald Williams to death back in February. Police have been tirelessly trying to track down the killer for two months.

Meghan McCorkell has more on what caused the violence.

Police say it was a dispute over money that sparked the incident.

Twenty-year-old Harry Malik Robertson faces the rest of his life behind bars, charged with first and second degree murder.

Police say Robertson had an argument with Williams insider a Morgan State baseball game. The fight spilled out into an off-campus housing complex. Police say that's where Robertson stabbed and killed Williams.

"Our investigation suggests that this incident is the result of a dispute over a small, inconsequential amount of money," said Police Commissioner Kevin Davis.

The killing left the entire campus on edge for weeks.

"First they didn't know who it was; then they didn't know if he was a student here," said student Naheem Strickland.

Robertson is from Bowie, the same town where Williams' family lives---though it's unclear if the two knew each other before college.

Investigators say tips from witnesses on the Morgan State campus were vital in solving the case. Still, some students worry since it took two months to make the arrest.

"I feel like the guy could have been out the next day while we were having class," said student Kyree Moore.

Police say they had a difficult time getting witnesses to come forward.

"Getting people comfortable to understand that they're not going to allow a killer to walk amongst them was one of the things we did," TJ Smith, Baltimore City police.

Many are now glad people did speak out.

"Our school is a community that can come together in times like that," said student Zakiyia Hawkins.

As they continue to mourn the loss of one of their own.

The Morgan State president has released a letter to students saying in part, "We appreciate the courage of those who came forward to assist in this investigation."
