WJZ To Broadcast Republican Senate Debate Saturday Night

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- While the Democratic primary race for Senate is still a dead heat, candidates in the Republican race for Senate are hoping to capitalize on voter discontent. They have a lot to say in a recent debate that will be televised on WJZ this weekend.

Political reporter Pat Warren was one of the panelists and has a preview of what you'll see.

The candidates stated positions on everything from the economy to gun control to global warming.

It's a less heated race with lesser-known candidates but the Republican Senate primary brings more than you might think: an alternative to the state's Democrat-dominated Congressional representation.

"What's the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results," said Delegate Kathy Szeliga.

Szeliga represents Baltimore and Harford counties and is one of three candidates appearing in the Republican Senate debate.

Bladensburg attorney Richard Douglas and Baltimore attorney and businessman Chrys Kefalas were also chosen by criteria established by the League of Women Voters out of a broader field of Republicans.

"It introduces a new viewpoint into Maryland politics even though the registration rate is 2-1 Democrat," said Matthew Crenson.

"I think that's a very important point because there are going to be a lot of crossover voters from the Democratic party and independents who are going to vote for Trump and maybe some of our other candidates," said Douglas.

"I know citizens across this state are looking for someone new---looking for a small business owner, a mom, a grandmom, somebody who cares desperately about the future of this nation and I know I'm the person that can do that," said Szeliga.

"I can get record numbers of Democrats to join our cause in places like Baltimore City and Prince George's County," said Chrys Kefalas.

There's hope that Larry Hogan's victory may prove beneficial in the general election but that could be neutralized by what's happening in the Republican presidential contest.

The biggest hurdle any candidate faces is getting themselves known and this may be their best opportunity.

So who do you think should represent Maryland in the US Senate? WJZ is broadcasting a series of special debates so you can hear directly from the candidates. Saturday night at 7, watch the Republican US Senate debate right here on WJZ.
