Thousands Expected To Run To Benefit Cancer Support Center

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--Cancer is so common that it's hard to find a family not to have been touched by the disease. In our area there is an independent organization that helps the patients and the families who are in the fight.

As Mike Schuh reports, they are asking for help.

Just outside the Beltway is a place for those touched by cancer.

The idea is that people affected by cancer need more than just medical care.

No one knows that better than Elise Ziv.

When her husband, Edward, developed brain cancer, everyone, Elize, Edward, and their kids Caleb and Cody needed help fighting, coping and ultimately letting go.

"And just walking through the doors here at Hopewell, aside from the  grounds are so welcoming and calming and enveloping, the people who come here get it."

But all this costs a lot of money, over million dollars a year.

Hopewell is putting up signs families have purchased to be set up during a 5K walk and run at at Goucher College.

"We get that money by hoping that lots and lots of people give us that support. We get no major foundation grants, once in a while we do. We have no money from national organizations so this race we have once a year is a quarter of our budget," Hopewell said.

Hopewell has helped thousands, but the thousands have helped each other.

Over 1,500 walkers, joggers and runners are expected to gather for the 19th Annual REACHOUT & Run on Sunday, April 10 at Goucher College beginning at 8:30 am to benefit HopeWell Cancer Support

Registration for the walk-run starts at Goucher College this Sunday at 7:00 a.m.

The cost is between $45 and $40 dollars.
