Towson Student Hospitalized After Alleged Hazing Incident

TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) -- A Towson University student has been hospitalized after an alleged hazing incident off-campus.

Tracey Leong has more on the actions being taken by the school and police.

Towson University officials tell WJZ they are looking into a situation where one of their students was injured off campus last week but at this time cannot confirm if it was hazing related.

A Towson University student was seriously injured after allegedly being forced to participate in a pledging initiation off campus on March 31.

A joint investigation with Towson University, campus police and Baltimore County police is now underway.

"A lot of information out there to what people may think happened until we confirm that there's a big difference between what we think happened and what we know happened," said Communications Senior Director Ray Feldman.

The student's family member alerted WJZ to this possible hazing incident. While the investigation is in the preliminary stage, campus officials say these are allegations they do not take lightly.

"Hazing is illegal. It is prohibited here and when we get an allegation of hazing, we respond immediately, take it seriously. If confirmed, we take action seriously," Feldman said.

At this time, Towson University is not releasing the student's name or the off-campus organization involved.

Anyone with information should contact police.
