Man Arrested After Police Find About 4,000 Packs of Illegal Cigarettes In His Car
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A New Jersey man was arrested in Baltimore County Wednesday after police say they found nearly 4,000 packs of cigarettes -- with a retail value of more than $25,000 -- being smuggled in the trunk of his Chevrolet Impala.
Investigators say 68-year-old Rosendo Perez-Torres was traveling from North Carolina, where the tax on cigarettes is far cheaper than his home state of New Jersey.
The Maryland Transportation Authority Police pulled him over on I-95 in Baltimore County and contacted the Comptroller of Maryland after finding the 30 cartons of cigarettes.
The tax loss for the state in this case is estimated at $7,900.
Perez-Torres's was charged for illegally transporting tobacco and his bail was set at $10,000.
