State Trooper Remains In Critical Condition After I-495 Crash

LANHAM, Md. (WJZ) -- A Maryland state trooper remains in critical condition after a massive crash on the Capitol Beltway.

The suspect who hit the trooper's patrol car was involved in multiple collisions in just a matter of minutes.

Trooper Ezra Ganeshanada, 26, was on the shoulder of I-495 investigating a crash Thursday when a Mercedes rear-ended him. The Mercedes spun out into the middle of the highway.

A tow truck then pushed the Mercedes into the side of the trooper's patrol car.

Police believe before hitting the trooper, the driver, 60-year-old Prasad Yadavali of New Jersey, was involved in a possible hit-and-run crash about a mile or more away from the scene.

It's not clear if Yadavali caused that crash with one or more vehicles, or if he was struck by a vehicle that didn't stop.

Trooper Ganeshanada joined the Maryland State Police in January of 2015. He graduated in July 2015. He is assigned to road patrol duties at the College Park Barrack.

The driver remains at the hospital as well. No charges have been filed against him.

Police continue to investigate the crash. They say there is no indication alcohol was a factor.
