10-Pound Oriole Bird Lands In Fells Point

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- It's one of the most familiar sports logos in Baltimore and around the country. It's orange and black and it's always flying high.

Ron Matz has more on a new bird that's just landed in Fells Point.

Everyone loves the Oriole bird and now a new one is going up on the brick facade of Jimmy's in Fells Point.

"It's our little niche, our little contribution to the Orioles because we really support them and they're a fun team to watch," said Nick Filipidis, Jimmy's Restaurant.

The ten pound bird is the work of artist Hermes Cuellar, who works at nearby Max's Taphouse.

"Mr. Nick at Jimmy's asked me to make an Orioles bird for the restaurant and I did," Cuellar said.

The bird is already the talk of Fells Point.

"It's a beautiful piece of art. I've been an Orioles fan for the last 34 years. That is my team," said Peter Array.

It won't be just Orioles fans who will see the new bird. Red Sox and Yankees fans always stop here when their teams are in town.

"The Yankees and Red Sox fans are always welcome here but I hope they know we always support the Orioles. We try to keep up the friendly rivalry and make it fun for everybody," Filipidis said.

And just about every Orioles fan would like to have one of these.

"It took me about two hours to make the bird out of plywood. It's four feet by four feet. I did the painting, too," Cuellar said.

The folks at Jimmy's say they're now working to get a Ravens bird to also put on the building on South Broadway.
