Public Meeting Focuses On Launch of Frederick STEM Center

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- Organizers of a new program offering college-level classes in science and technology in Frederick County are holding a public meeting to discuss the expected launch this fall.

The Frederick County Chamber of Commerce is hosting the event Thursday morning in Frederick. It's a meeting of the governing board of the Center for Research and Education in Science and Technology, or CREST.

Local businesses are behind the effort to offer more courses locally to adult learners and graduate students.

The project got a boost this month when the General Assembly approved $244,000 in state funding for the 2017 fiscal year, which begins July 1.

CREST Planning Director Sue Houghton tells The Frederick News-Post that the program will launch this fall with courses in biochemistry and molecular biology from Johns Hopkins University.
