Candidates For Senate Race Make Last-Minute Pitch For Voters

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- We are hours away from voters marking their ballots for the vacating Maryland US Senate seat and the Democratic candidates are leaving no stone unturned as they push for your vote.

Marcus Washington has the last hours on the campaign trail for Chris Van Hollen and Donna Edwards.

It's the mad rush to shake as many hands and reach as many voters as possible. Both Donna Edwards and Chris Van Hollen are looking to claim the Maryland US Senate seat held by Senator Barbara Mikulski for the past 29 years. She's a small woman but with big shoes to fill.

"First of all, I never like to say filling her shoes because I think it's important to build on her legacy of support," Edwards said.

WJZ caught up with Donna Edwards at 88.9 FM on the Marc Steiner Show, where Edwards was reaching voters through the airwaves.

"A vote for me, for Donna Edwards, is a vote for middle class," she said. "Because when we have diverse voices around the table, we make better decision, whether that is in government or is in business or in the non-profit sector where I come from, you make better decisions."

Not too far away at Belvedere Square, we found Chris Van Hollen.

"At the end of the day, I think people want to see someone who has a track record of not just voting the right way on big issues but having actually led," he said.

When it comes to that last minute push for votes---does it work?

"Honestly, not really," said Emily Harris.

"It sort of helps me out a little," said Monica Jones. "Absolutely [still] a tough decision."

The polls open at 7 a.m. Tuesday and close at 8 p.m.
