Donna Edwards Spends Tuesday Connecting With Voters

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) -- Congresswoman Donna Edwards is in a heated race with Chris Van Hollen to take over for longtime Senator Barbara Mukulski.

Ava-joye Burnett was at her campaign headquarters.

After months of hitting the ground, campaigning and asking people for their votes, the duty now shifts and the power is now in the hands of the voters.

For months, Donna Edwards' supporters took to the streets and the candidate time and time again made her own case.

"On April 25th, we have an opportunity to make history again," she said.

Now, in these final hours as Marylanders head to the polls, Edwards is hopeful.

"I feel great. The voters get to say what they think," she said.

Edwards and Chris Van Hollen, both Democrats, are running to succeed Mikulski, who's retiring after 30 years.

If Edwards wins, she will be only the second black woman voted into the US Senate.

Whomever wins tonight has big shoes to fill.

"My perspective as a mom who has raised a fine young black man is that it is really important for me to carry these views and visions into the United States Senate, the visions of a lot of moms and parents who feel like their voices are not at the table," Edwards said.

She currently represents the fourth Congressional district on Capitol Hill. That's part of Prince George's County and Anne Arundel County. A win Tuesday would be a step up for Edwards to the higher chamber of the Senate.
