Mayoral Race Comes Down To Last Minute Push For Voters

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Voters are heading to the polls in one of the most hotly-contested mayor's races. The top candidates have been battling for months in the race to run City Hall---now it all comes down to today.

Meghan McCorkell has more on the last minute push for votes.

The candidates are hitting as many polling places as possible Tuesday as the race comes down to the wire.

Today's the day. After months of debates, endorsements and campaign promises, voters will pick the mayoral candidate who will move ahead to the general election.

It's a diverse field of both seasoned politicians and political outsiders.

"At the end of the day, I want to be able to walk across this street---win, lose or draw---and have a conversation about moving this city forward," said Catherine Pugh.

"We need you to be part of the process and in order to do that, you have to vote," said Sheila Dixon.

"I think people are really digging in and I'm feeling a lot of energy and a lot of love out in the street," said Carl Stokes.

"I just feel like this mood for change in Baltimore. It's what I like to hear," said Elizabeth Embry.

"I'm excited about where we are in this race. I love talking about the issues that are really going to change Baltimore and I think people are really hungry for that," said David Warnock.

A dozen Democratic candidates are on the ballot, all vying to replace Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. It's been a hard-fought and sometimes contentious six month battle. Now it's all in the hands of the voters.

Five Republicans are also running for mayor.
