Morgan State University Designated A National Treasure

BALTIMORE (AP) — The National Trust for Historic Preservation is naming Morgan State University a national treasure.

The trust and the historically black university in Baltimore announced Tuesday that they are partnering to develop a preservation plan that stewards historic buildings, while planning for the school's future.

University President David Wilson says they are "excited and honored" by the designation. The school has already preserved portions of the campus, including the university chapel, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Morgan was founded in 1867 and was one of the first institutions to offer post-secondary education for African Americans. The campus has 20 structures eligible for listing on the National Register. The buildings were designed by black architects such as Albert Cassell, Hilyard Robinson, Louis Fry and Leon Bridges.
