Flower Mart Returns To Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- From honey petunias to black eyed Susans, some of the most beautiful and interesting flowers are sprouting up in Mount Vernon.

Flower Mart is officially underway and Amy Yensi attended the opening ceremony.

They say April showers bring May flowers and that means Flower Mart is back.

"I come every year. I pick flowers for my flower basket here," said Beth Perry.

The annual celebration turns Mount Vernon Place into a garden.

"FLower Mart is about promoting civility in Baltimore through the community, the vendors," said Flower Mart vice president John Valentini.

Entertainment, activities and fun food options are the backdrop to the hundreds of blooms and plants.

"I think especially with the uptick in urban gardening that this is impeccable to bring this to a city that's at the forefront," said vendor Erin Carroll.

"It's a great opportunity to interact with all sorts of stuff you wouldn't normally get to do," said visitor Annalise Heron.

Some of the proceeds benefit local charities.

The Mother's Day weekend tradition will go on rain or shine.

"It's just something different that brings out the whole community," said visitor Brit Akas. "Even throughout the rain."

In addition to seeing all the flowers and enjoying the entertainment, vendors say the Flower Mart is the place to find a unique gift for mom.

"Some of the items here are very unique. I don't think you can get a Venus flytrap in a mall," said Linden Perry. "She got the card and the box of chocolates but this is just something else on top."

Flower Mart is celebrating its 17th year. Admission to the festival is free.
