Baltimore Police Warn Of Recent Carjackings

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A warning for drivers: city police are investigating a string of carjackings.

Marcus Washington has more.

It's not a new crime, but it is a crime of opportunity, vulnerability and deceit.

The carjackings in Baltimore City begin with a bump from behind, what seems to be a minor fender-bender.

"When these people get out of their cars to assess the damage or check on the well-being of the people who ran into them, someone else is jumping into their cars and driving away," said Baltimore City police detective Donny Moses.

Moses says for nearly five months---beginning Dec. 24---these types of carjackings have happened across the city. The latest was May 3 at McHenry's Row.

Police ask drivers to be cautious and exercise common sense.

"We're asking people to trust their instincts. If you find yourself in this situation---it doesn't look right, it doesn't feel right, something's just not right about what's going on---stay in your vehicle. Keep the windows up and doors locked and call 911," said Moses.

In reported cases, the carjackers are armed and have even attacked their victims.

City police have identified 12 suspects in connection to the carjackings.

Investigators believe all the recent incidents are connected.
