Obama to Honor 13 Police Officers With Medal of Valor

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is honoring 13 law enforcement officers who risked their lives to protect others.

Obama will present the Medal of Valor at a ceremony in the East Room on Monday. The medals recognize exceptional courage to save human life in the face of personal risk.

Three Santa Monica, California, officers are being honored for their response to a 2013 rampage on a community college campus that left five people dead. A suburban Dallas officer receiving themedal killed two armed men in a gunfight outside a provocative contest for caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.

One Philadelphia officer will be honored posthumously. Sgt. Robert Wilson III died from a gunshot wound as he worked to keep store workers and customers safe during an armed robbery.
