Plebes Undergo 'Sea Trials' to Mark End of Freshman Year

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- The Naval Academy freshman class endures the annual Sea Trials today to mark the end of their year of training.

Through a series of obstacle courses called "phases", the plebes are put through a rigorous test of strength and teamwork.

The obstacle courses are designed to build up the plebes' strength, both physically and mentally so they're ready when they're out on the battlefield.

"My legs feel like they're about to fall off, so that's a little difficult," said one freshman.

More than 800 plebes put their training to the test on Tuesday.

"Getting down into the mud and just being covered from head to toe was kind of gross, but other than that, it's been pretty gross," said Emma Scott.

"It was quite the experience. It was really cold. Not so fun," said Brittany Bongiovani, midshipman 4th class

The upperclassmen also help lead the plebes through the obstacles.

"You know you get out here and do 15 hours worth of running around and doing all this different stuff. I hope they're proud of themselves," said Tommy Gruebl, phase commander, midshipman 1st class.

Eventhough the plebes are encouraged to do well individually the groups with the best teamwork outperform the rest.

"Everybody sort of comes together and you just, you come out of it feeling like family," said Warren Mazanec, midshipman 3rd class.

At the finish, the bonds built over an entire year are cemented for a lifetime.

Officials say the plebes that are not a part of this year's Sea Trials aren't taking the day off, they're out on assignment or are taking part in other training.

This year, the U.S. Naval Academy has more than 1,1oo plebes in it's freshman class.
