Suspect In Armed Attack On Baltimore Elderly Couple Arrested

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A one-man crime machine targeting a Baltimore community -- that's how police have described the suspect accused of attacking an elderly couple in their Patterson Park home.

Now 20-year-old Darrell Johns is behind bars for a crime that outraged a community.

WJZ's Meghan McCorkell has more on the investigation.

"He was just waving that gun. He said, 'I'm going top kill you, I'm going to kill your wife,'" said 82-year-old John Sellman, who breathes a sigh of relief now that the man police say attacked him and his wife inside their Patterson Park home is behind bars.

Darrell Johns, 20, turned himself into police Tuesday morning. Investigators say he pushed his way inside the elderly couple's home and then robbed and attacked them.

"I'm still all bruised up here from him walking all over me," said Sellman.

The crime outraged the Patterson Park community.

"They're great neighbors. Really nice people," said Jeremy Tippett, neighbor.

Something else has John Sellman outraged... "What really ticked me off is when they started showing me his record," he said.

Investigators say Johns was wanted on multiple warrants, including an attempted murder along Bank Street just six weeks ago. He also faces charges in a recent theft and an armed carjacking.

According to court documents obtained by WJZ, just last year, Johns was found guilty of robbery and sentenced to 15 years in jail. Most of that time was suspended, so he only served about five months.

"This is part of what has plagued some of the city streets with violence. We aren't talking about new criminals, we're talking about criminals who repeatedly do these things," said T.J. Smith, Baltimore Police Department.

Now Sellman says he wants Johns behind bars.

"I don't want any plea bargain, nothing like that. I don't want it because this guy doesn't deserve to be on the street," said Sellman.

Court records show Johns was on supervised probation at the time of this latest crime spree.
