Student Survives Shooting To Graduate With His Class

BOWIE, Md. (WJZ) -- A Maryland high school student survived a gunshot wound to walk with his class at graduation this week.

Graduation is a rite of passage for many young people but for Turan Caudle, a star football player at Frederick Douglass High School in Upper Marlboro---who dreamed of playing college ball and who saw his world almost end last January---it's even more so.

Police say Caudle and two teammates were playing video games when an argument broke out. They say Delano Dunmore shot his two friends and then himself. Police arrested and charged the 16-year-old with attempted murder and assault.

Caudle was in critical condition, fighting for his life.

"The bullet entered in the back left part of his skull and the bullet exited above his left eye," said a doctor.

"My son made it and it's God's blessing," said his father.

After months of rehabilitation, Caudle has recovered. He even went to prom---and this week, he graduated.

"It was a very happy feeling. He fought, he never gave up, acted like nothing never went on," Sherita Caudle said.

On a stage, a young man walked toward something few expected: a future.

"I'm nervous but hey, I did it, man," he said.

Caudle's parents say he has a summer job lined up and in the fall, he will be coming to Baltimore to attend a trade school.

The teen suspect in the case is awaiting trial.
