Steve Melewski Talks O's Starting Pitching + Davis Struggles

MASN's Steve Melewski joined the Scott Garceau show with Jeremy Conn to talk about Mike Wright's solid outing against the Royals last night, Yovani Gallardo's latest rehab start and Chris Davis' slow start this season.

After being optioned to Norfolk following his last start, Mike Wright was quickly recalled when setup man Darren O' Day hit the disabled list. Wright took the mound against the Royals last night and delivered a solid outing for the Birds giving up only one unearned run over seven innings. Melewski spoke about what Orioles catcher Matt Wieters had to say following Wright's good outing saying, "He talked about how focused Mike was on each pitch…he said it's hard for all of us to have that sharp of focus that he had 30 starts a year, but you strive for that."

Yovani Gallardo had a rehab start today with the Norfolk Tides and gave up three earned runs over five innings. Although Gallardo hasn't looked particularly sharp in his rehab starts, Melewski says he thinks Gallardo is feeling better and guesses the Orioles will start him Sunday in Toronto. "Pitchers can tell how they're doing beyond the results we see…with Gallardo particularly, this guy, I have just been encouraged by his comments every step of the way," said Melewski.

Chris Davis is batting just .213 with 11 homeruns and 29 RBI's. At this point in the season last year, he was hitting just .219 with 12 homeruns and 33 RBI's. Melewski thinks he will come out of his slow start soon. "Right now he's expanding the zone, he's struggling to hit breaking balls, his timing is off…whenever I see Chris Davis in one of these funks, you got to figure a good hitting stretch is coming," said Melewski.
