School Police Officer Opens Fire During Shooting In SW Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--Baltimore Police are continuing to investigate a shooting involving a City Schools police officer on Wednesday morning.

Police responded around 9:20 a.m. to a shooting incident in the 200 block of Collins Ave.

According to investigators, a school police officer was in his vehicle when he witnessed a shooting in the Irvington neighborhood of Baltimore.

"We know about 9:20 this morning a school police officer was in the area and observed what they believe to be a non-fatal shooting occurring," said Baltimore Police Lt. Jarron Jackson.

Police say the school officer then apparently got out of his car and chased after the suspect.

During the incident, the school officer was forced to open fire when the suspect started shooting.

Witnesses tell WJZ they heard loud bangs and took cover in the Irvington neighborhood--a trend they say is coming all too common.

"It's starting to become a pretty routine now, I don't know what is going on, but it seems it's happening too often now."

Jackson says one man suffered a non-life threatening gun shot wound to the leg, not related to the school officer's shooting.

Police say they have the shooter in custody at this time.

It's still unknown at this time why the school officer was in the area Wednesday morning.

Investigators tell WJZ that this unusual crime scene also involved a car accident.

"This is a very complicated scene, we need as much information as we can to piece together all the pieces of this puzzle."

Anyone with any information is asked to call police.
